Giving Your Hair A Break

A very common issue people have with their hair is dryness and lack of growth. The reasons may vary, but after I talked to a very beautiful girl at the Grow A Fro event with a short afro I realized I don't talk about this enough. Give your hair a break once in a while.

For most people giving their hair a break seems to mean wearing a weave, extensions or a wig. This is the opposite of what I mean. That is giving you a break from your hair, not giving your hair a break. Regardless if you wear your hair out and style it regularly or if you cover up your hair (e.i. Weave, wig, extensions) your hair needs some "down time". No hair style is good to do all the time if you want your hair to grow healthy. And especially not hair styles where you can't reach your hair to moisturize it daily or every other day. If your hair is constantly covered up you can't expect it to be as healthy as someone who doesn't cover their hair regularly. Why? Because when your hair is covered up it's very difficult to get water or products to reach the hair strands and do what you intend for them to do.

This is also one of the reasons why you shouldn't wear wigs, weaves and extensions back to back. You should give your hair a break as long as the extent of time you have worn the covered up style. For an example, if you wear box braids with extensions for six weeks you should at least take a six week break before you style it in another covered up style like for an example Senegalese twists

During this break it's important to really take care of your hair: deep condition regularly, try to stay away from heat, infuse a lot of moisture, etc. Give your hair a lot of love! If your aim for the covered up hair styles is to be a protective style your hair needs to be in the best health possible before the style is installed, otherwise it's not protective, it can actually cause your hair damage instead. Healthy hair grows, so if you're stuck at the same length you need to re-evaluate your hair routine.
