"Afro hair" on Swedish TV

Scrolling along the posts in the Afrotalk Facebook group (Swedish group dedicated to kinky/curly hair) I found a post about "afro hair" (many in Sweden use the term "afrohar" to define our hair) being discussed on Aktuellt (Swedish news show). Of course I had to watch it! :)

The main focus was the natural hair movement in the Ivory Coast, they discussed how the women were "going back to their roots" and embraced their natural hair textures and skin tone as a way to "revolt" against European beauty standards. The way the reporters talk about it is almost as if they can't believe it, like "they are moving away from the beauty standards of straight hair and pale skin, wow!" What I thought was interesting about this is how the focus was on the women in the Ivoy Coast, "them over there," as if we here in Sweden/Scandinavia/Europe are not doing the exact same thing! It made me laugh! But at least Anna Adeniji who was being interviewed mentioned that there is a community here in Sweden as well. She also did an excellent job in answering the question "Why is hair so important?".

Watch the discussion (in Swedish) here! It starts at about 33minutes in.
It will only be available until April 6th.
